GUWAHATI, Feb 16: The Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is driving a major transformation of railway infrastructure across Assam and the Northeast, with dozens of stations undergoing phased redevelopment to enhance passenger amenities and connectivity.
The scheme focuses on comprehensive, long-term station modernisation through detailed master plans aimed at improving access roads, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts and escalators, along with better cleanliness, free Wi-Fi and modern passenger information systems.

Executive lounges, business meeting spaces, landscaping and upgraded station façades are also being incorporated.
Officials said the initiative also promotes local entrepreneurship through ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks, creating new economic opportunities for local communities.
Under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment, including 60 across the Northeast.
Of these, 50 stations are located in Assam, four in Tripura and one each in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland, making Assam the largest beneficiary in the region.
Haibargaon railway station became the first completed Amrit Bharat station in Assam and was inaugurated in May 2025. Developed on the theme “Virasat Bhi Vikas Bhi,” the redeveloped station blends modern amenities with Assamese cultural elements an includes Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure.
Significant progress has been reported across multiple railway divisions in Assam.
Under Alipurduar Division, Fakiragram has achieved 88 per cent physical progress, Kokrajhar 78 per cent, Dhubri 80 per cent and Gauripur 82 per cent. In Rangiya Division, Majbat station has reached 98 per cent completion and Viswanath Chariali 97 per cent.
Chaparmukh station under Lumding Division has recorded 85 per cent progress, while North Lakhimpur station and Simaluguri Junction under Tinsukia Division have each achieved 65 per cent progress. Mendipathar station in Meghalaya has reached 73 per cent completion.
Officials said the upgraded stations are expected to improve ease of travel, generate employment and business opportunities, and emerge as hubs of socio-economic activity, reflecting the government’s push for inclusive and future-ready development across Assam and the Northeast.
