GUWAHATI, Jan 25: Noted folk singer Seema Das, widely admired for her immense contribution to Kamrupi folk music, passed away on January 14. She was a retired teacher of Tiniali Brindavati Das Girls’ High School and a respected figure in Assam’s cultural and academic circles.
A regular artiste of the Guwahati All India Radio Centre from 1982 to 2000, Seema Das was best known for her soulful renditions of Kamrupi and Goalpariya folk songs, through which she played a significant role in preserving and popularising Assam’s rich folk traditions. Her musical journey was closely associated with reputed institutions such as Goalpara College and Gauhati University, where her contributions were highly valued.

Seema Das was the wife of late Nripendra Narayan Das, a retired officer of the Reserve Bank of India. She is survived by her two daughters, grandchildren and a large circle of relatives, students and admirers who cherished her artistry and gentle personality. Her son, noted artist Anal Jyoti Das, had predeceased her in a tragic accident.
Several organisations, including Tiniali Brindavati Das Girls’ High School and Aelita Art & Craft School, have expressed deep sorrow over her demise and paid rich tributes to her lasting legacy in the field of folk music and education. Her passing marks an irreparable loss to Assam’s cultural heritage.
