CM claims downward trend domestic discord cases

JORHAT, Feb 5: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma observed that different initiatives for women empowerment and welfare undertaken by his government in the past five years, had enabled vast improvement in the lives of families in the state with significant reduction in incidents of domestic discord and violence.

Speaking at the ‘Mukhyamantrir Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan’ (MMUA), (popularly known as Lakhpati Baideo’ scheme) cheque distribution ceremony at the Jorhat Stadium today, Sarma said that since the launching of Orunodoi scheme, a flagship initiative for women empowerment, had led to  significant transformation in the lives of women with much positive change witnessed in the husband-wife relationship.

Stating that husbands were becoming supportive towards their spouses following enhancement in the economic scenario of the families, Sarma said that incidents of domestic discord and violence had come down notably. 

Stating that the empowerment  of women had led to gaining respect from family members and society, he said that husbands were extending support in many ways to their spouses for coming out of the households for different activities related to financial and social matters. 

Listing the series of schemes initiated by the Government for the benefit of women and girls, the Chief Minister said that the MMUA was one such step for boosting women-led ventures, promoting self-reliance, and ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities at the grassroots level.

He said altogether 32 lakh women would be covered across the State under MMUA with the first installment of Rs 10,000 initial seed capital installment the Government would spend Rs 3200 crores for this initiative. 

Informing that 18000 beneficiaries from Jorhat LAC would be benefitting under MMUA, Sarma said that so far 27,10,000 women across 109 Assembly constituencies have received the first installment and remaining would be paid soon. Sarma stated that the Government will provide training and market linkages to the MMUA beneficiaries to see that their ventures turn out to be successful.
