The programme was held in the presence of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania and other officials.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor lauded the efforts of the GMC, noting that Guwahati’s rise to the 44th position in the national cleanliness rankings in 2025 from an earlier rank of 402 reflects a historic achievement.

He congratulated the Mayor, his team and sanitation workers, whose dedication he said played a crucial role in this transformation.

Highlighting the significance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Acharya said the mission goes beyond sanitation and serves as a foundation for nation-building. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on cleanliness and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to turn it into a mass movement since 2014, he said the campaign has united citizens across the country.

He paid special tribute to sanitation workers, describing them as guardians of public health and urging citizens to respect their silent and disciplined service.

Referring to the Sanskrit saying “Shuchirbhutah Shuchih Bhavet,” Acharya stressed that true purity includes both external cleanliness and inner conduct.

He said a clean environment is essential for public health, environmental protection and a secure future for coming generations.
