MARGHERITA, March 1: In harmony with the auspicious commencement of the Margherita Mahotsav 2026 and the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Margherita Journalist Association, established in 2002, distinguished litterateur, educationist, lyricist and composer Barun Bora was conferred the “Margherita Mahiyan Award 2026” at Margherita College on Sunday.
The event, organised on the occasion of veteran literary pensioner Barun Bora’s 88th birthday, recognised his decades-long literary pursuit, continuous service to the field of education and contributions to the development of Assamese language and culture.
On the occasion, the felicitation book ‘Abhidarshan’ was formally unveiled by Barun Bora himself.
Barun Bora’s writings reflect the inner pains of society, hopes and aspirations, the struggles of ordinary people and a deep connection with the soil. Through his songs and melodies, he has preserved the authentic essence of folk life
Heartfelt birthday wishes were extended with traditional Assamese phulam gamosa, mementos, citation letters and congratulatory messages by various social and cultural organisations and individuals, including the Margherita Journalist Association, AJYCP Margherita Regional Committee, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad (Assam), Margherita Senior Citizen Association, Satra Mukti Sangram Samity, Uttar Margherita Writers Association and Central Margherita Muslim Society.
The programme began with a welcome address by Reception Committee president Nareshwar Hazarika and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. In his speech, Barun Bora said that literature clearly reflects the history, multi-ethnic coexistence and cultural diversity of the Margherita region.
The event was formally inaugurated by Ranajyoti Neog, president of the Tinsukia District Journalist Association, who described Barun Bora as a “witness of time, socially conscious and a literary practitioner who shapes generations.” A cake-cutting ceremony was also held with family members participating.
