Jorhat, Mar 07: In a significant step towards strengthening Assam’s cooperative dairy infrastructure, Purabi Dairy today carried out the Bhoomi Pujan and foundation stone laying ceremony for three new dairy processing projects in Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji.
The main programme was held at Kaliapani in Teok under the Mariani constituency in Jorhat district. Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) performed the Bhoomi Pujan and laid the foundation stone for the project.

The event was attended by Assam’s Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Krishnendu Paul, Cooperation Minister Jogen Mohan, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and Power Minister Prasanta Phukan. Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Dr. Meenesh Shah, Additional Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) Varsha Joshi, and Commissioner and Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Assam M. S. Maniranjan were also present.
During the programme, the Bhoomi Pujan ceremonies for the proposed dairy processing units in Dibrugarh and Dhemaji were also conducted virtually.
It may be mentioned that the proposed dairy processing plant at Jorhat will have a capacity of 100,000 litres per day and will be established under the Central Sector Scheme National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) by the East Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (EAMUL).
Meanwhile, the projects in Dibrugarh and Dhemaji will be set up under IDF-XXXI by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of the Government of Assam. These projects will be operated by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL) under the brand Purabi Dairy.
Currently, milk procurement operations are ongoing in several districts including Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Charaideo, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli. Through this initiative, dairy farmers are getting the opportunity to become part of an organized cooperative milk production system.
So far, EAMUL has connected more than 11,000 farmers across over 1,300 villages through 540 Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS).
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said that the expansion of Purabi Dairy infrastructure in Upper Assam reflects the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative dairy movement and empowering rural producers.
Speaking on the occasion, Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Krishnendu Paul said that establishing new dairy projects in Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji is a significant step in Assam’s dairy development plan. He added that it will enhance organized milk procurement and benefit rural communities and dairy farmers.
