Veteran educationist Rajat Chandra Goswami passes away at 96

GUWAHATI, March 9: Veteran educationist and recipient of the Governor’s Distinguished Teacher Award Rajat Chandra Goswami passed away at his residence at Baghjan Adhar Satra under Hatigarh Mouza in Jorhat on Sunday morning. He was 96.

Born in 1931, Goswami devoted his life to education and social service, inspiring generations of students during his long teaching career.

He retired from Dipholu Primary School and was widely respected for his contributions to the academic and cultural life of the region.

A recipient of several honours, Goswami was awarded the State’s Distinguished Teacher Award by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Teachers’ Day in 2025.

The governor had personally visited his residence to confer the honour.

Goswami also played an active role in social and literary organisations.

He served as the founding principal of Maghai Oja Sishu Niketan and was associated with the Asam Sahitya Sabha as the founding secretary of the Hatigarh Mouza branch.

Over the years, he held several positions in educational, cultural and social institutions in the region.

In recognition of his contributions, he received the Hatigarh Gaurav Award in 2013, the title of Samaj Shiromoni in 2015 and the Maghai Oja Award in 2017.

During the early years of the Assamese daily Dainik Janambhumi, he also served as a news contributor from the Hatigarh area.

Despite his advancing age, Goswami remained active in intellectual pursuits and continued reading newspapers regularly.

Family members said he had been feeling physically weak in recent days but had dinner as usual on Saturday night before retiring to bed.

As news of his demise spread, a large number of admirers, students and well-wishers gathered at his residence to pay their last respects.

Representatives of the district administration, educational institutions and several social and cultural organisations attended the condolence meeting held in his memory.

His mortal remains were taken to Hatigarh High School and Maghai Oja Sishu Niketan, where teachers, students and community members bid a final farewell.

Goswami is survived by a son, a daughter-in-law, three daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and other family members.
