DIPHU, March 17: The Congress-led opposition alliance in Karbi Anglong on Monday announced candidates for four Assembly constituencies ahead of the 2026 polls, while discussions are ongoing for two others.
At a joint press conference held at Hotel Hempi in Diphu, leaders of the Indian National Congress and All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) said they would jointly contest the elections to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party.
APHLC president Jones Ingti Kathar announced that he would contest from Diphu (ST), while Karbi Anglong District Congress president Raton Engti will contest from Bokajan. West Karbi Anglong District Congress president Augustin Enghi has been named for Rongkhang (ST) and APHLC’s Bikram Hanse for Amri (ST).
Kathar said that candidates for Howraghat and Haflong constituencies are yet to be finalised and will be announced soon after consultations among alliance partners.
Speaking to the media, Engti criticised the BJP-led government, alleging lack of economic opportunities and unfulfilled promises. He claimed that previous Congress-led administrations in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council had enabled local participation in development works.
Alliance leaders acknowledged ideological differences between national and regional parties but emphasised unity to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections.
