Oppn AIUDF names candidates for 12 seats in 2nd list for Assam polls

GUWAHATI, March 17: Opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Tuesday announced its second list of 12 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, naming party president and former MP Badruddin Ajmal and three sitting MLAs, among others.

With this, the party has named its nominees for 21 constituencies, with the first list declared for nine seats on March 9.

The elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held on April 9, and votes will be counted on May 4.

The second list named three sitting MLAs – Hafiz Bashir Ahmed (Goalpara East), Nazrul Hoque (Dhubri) and Ashraful Hussain (Chenga).

Ajmal, also a former MLA himself, will be contesting from the Binnakandi constituency.

Among other candidates named in the second list are Mazibur Rahman (Dalgaon), Abdul Aziz (Samaguri), Musukha Basumatary (Bijni), Mukut Das (Raha) and Anup Krishna Das Talukdar (Ram Krishna Nagar).

The AIUDF had retained three of its incumbent MLAs in the first list – Aminul Islam (senior), Hafiz Rafiqul Islam and Nizanur Rahman from Rupahihat, Mandia and Gauripur constituencies, respectively.

The AIUDF is not part of any opposition alliance, although it had tried to join the Congress-led bloc.

Ajmal had said earlier that the party will contest in 25-30 seats in the coming elections.

In the outgoing Assembly, the ruling BJP’s strength is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven, and the BPF has three.

In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 members, AIUDF has 15 members, and the CPI(M) has one MLA. There is one Independent legislator also. (PTI)
