MORIGAON, May 20: Several Tiwa organisations on Wednesday strongly opposed the government’s reported move to establish a proposed satellite township at Sindhisar in Jagiroad near Guwahati and demanded a written assurance from the Chief Secretary against the project.
In connection with the issue, representatives of the organisations held discussions with the District Commissioner of Morigaon at the DC’s conference hall.
The organisations stated that no satellite township should be set up within areas falling under the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC), asserting that indigenous Tiwa communities possess traditional rights over the land in the region.
The groups also expressed dissatisfaction over the district administration’s recent decision to suspend certain proceedings related to the project.
According to the organisations, while the administration had suspended the rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) process linked to the proposed township, the order only halted survey activities and did not cancel the entire project.
The organisations said they could not fully accept the administration’s decision unless the government provided a clear written assurance that the proposed satellite township at Sindhisar, Jagiroad, would not be implemented.
The Tiwa bodies further maintained that protection of indigenous land rights and safeguarding the interests of the ethnic community remained their primary concern.
