TEZPUR, May 23: In a major push to tourism, public welfare and healthcare infrastructure in Sonitpur district, District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das on Saturday announced the introduction of a light-and-sound show at the historic Agnigarh in Tezpur.
The proposed show will depict the legendary romance of Usha and Aniruddha as well as the mythological “Hari-Hara Yuddha” associated with King Baan.
The announcement was made during a programme organised at Chitralekha Udyan, where the District Commissioner also inaugurated three new adventure sports facilities — sky cycling, zipline and zorbing ball — for tourists and visitors.
Speaking at the event, DC Das said the initiatives were aimed at increasing tourist attraction to Chitralekha Udyan and other heritage sites of Tezpur while also addressing important social welfare concerns.
As part of the welfare programme, the District Commissioner handed over financial assistance of ₹50,000 to the family of Rukmini Talukdar, an economically disadvantaged woman undergoing treatment for a critical illness.
The assistance was received by her husband Keshab Talukdar.
Das also presented a cheque of ₹55,000 to Bhaskar Choudhury, a meritorious student from an economically weaker background who recently secured admission to a National Law University.
In another initiative, bicycles were distributed among seven students from financially disadvantaged families in the Dhekiajuli and Naduar Assembly constituencies to assist them in commuting to school.
The beneficiaries included Anjali Bhuyan, Sukarmani Munda, Tili Baskey, August Orang and Budai Choren from Raunathpur ME School, along with Maina Mochahari and Someshwar Mosahari from Chatai Garo MV School.
The programme was attended by Additional District Commissioners Kamal Baruah and Kuldeep Hazarika, Assistant Commissioners Arunav Barkotoky and Rajen Acharya, Tezpur Municipal Board Executive Officer Charan Thomas, environmental activist Suresh Sirohia, Joint Director of Health Services Dr Biman Sarma and businessman Madan Sing, among others.
The event was anchored by Pankaj Baruah and District Information and Public Relations Officer Ankita Gogoi.
Later, the District Commissioner inaugurated a modern air-conditioned mortuary at Tezpur Kanaklata Civil Hospital in the presence of senior Health Department officials.
The facility has been established for preservation of bodies for post-mortem examinations.
