DIPHU, June 14: In an effort to promote cleanliness and civic responsibility, educated youths of Diphu town under the banner of “Our Karbi Anglong”, in collaboration with “Karbi Dreams”, organised a major cleanliness drive at Ha-i Long Park along the bank of the Diphu river recently.

More than 50 volunteers participated in the initiative, which was supported by the Diphu Municipal Board (DMB) and the district administration. The drive, conducted from 6 am to 12 noon, focused on cleaning the park and its surrounding areas by removing garbage and clearing weeds from the riverside recreational spot.

Volunteers collected large quantities of plastic waste, empty drinking water bottles, chips packets, polythene bags, pan masala sachets and other litter scattered across the park and disposed of them at designated dumping sites.

Speaking on the occasion, co-founder of Our Karbi Anglong, Barithe Rongpi, acknowledged the efforts of the Diphu Municipal Board in maintaining cleanliness across the town but expressed concern over the lack of civic sense among some residents and shopkeepers.

He said municipal workers regularly collect garbage and waste from markets and commercial establishments, but many people continue to litter public spaces soon after the cleaning operations are completed.

Rongpi stressed that maintaining cleanliness in public places is as important as keeping one’s home and surroundings clean, adding that unhygienic conditions contribute to the spread of diseases.

Founder of Our Karbi Anglong, Shivani Engtipi, urged people to become more conscious about maintaining cleanliness and protecting the environment.

“By keeping our surroundings clean, we are ensuring a healthy environment for future generations,” she said.

CEO of Karbi Dreams, Arbika Teronpi, said the primary objective of the drive was to create awareness among young people about the importance of cleanliness and environmental hygiene.

She noted that greater civic awareness and public participation would help make Diphu cleaner and healthier, while also complementing ongoing development efforts in the town. Teronpi also thanked DMB Chairman Rah Kro, Executive Engineer Prodip Rongpi and municipal staff for extending support to the initiative by providing gloves, face masks, garbage collection bags and refreshments for the volunteers.
