IMPHAL, April 8 (NNN): Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra alleged that BJP is running the government with heavy taxes on essential commodities. The Congress leader said this as the party has stepped up the protest over the steep hike in the prices of the essential commodities.

Continuing the party’s protest against the steep hike in fuel prices, MPCC along with Grievances Cell of Labour Department of INTUC and Kishan Congress staged a protest in Imphal’s Keishampat Junction today. The opposition Congress has been organizing a series of protests against the price hike under the banner “Mehngai Mukt Bharat Dharna and March” since April 2 last.

Taking part in the protest, MPCC president K Meghachandra came down heavily on the BJP saying that the government run by the party failed to take up works to create income by developing infrastructures and assets for resource mobilization. “Instead, the party is running the government by collecting heavy taxes from petroleum products, medicines, farm machineries and other products,” he added.

The MPCC president also alleged that the BJP had attracted voters with several promises for the welfare of the people and for upliftment of their living standard. “However, after the elections, the prices of petrol and diesel have risen 14 times in the last 16 days, and the common man is the most affected due to this,” he added. Meghachandra also said that the prices of the petroleum products were hiked even as there was no increase in the price of the crude oil in the international market. “This hike in the prices of the fuel has led to the skyrocketing prices of the essential commodities,” the MPCC president pointed out. He also said that such price hike has given a great negative impact to the farmers as prices of the farm machinery have increased manifolds. “This will, in turn, lead to the hike in the prices of the farm products which will be another burden on the head of the poor section of the society,” he further said.
