SHILLONG, Nov 24 (NNN): The Meghalaya government has decided to seek financial assistance from the Centre for the setting up of new police stations and police outposts in areas identified as “sensitive” along the inter-state border with Assam.
Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that chief minister Conrad K Sangma-led cabinet delegation will be raising this issue during the meeting with the Union home minister Amit Shah.
“We will discuss the creation of new outposts and also new police stations in such areas which have been identified as sensitive,” he said.

He said that the state government will seek financial assistance from the Centre for the immediate setting up of police stations and police outposts along the inter-state border.
The decision came after five persons from Meghalaya were killed in the firing at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district on Tuesday morning.
After visiting Mukroh along with the cabinet delegation, Tynsong said the government had earlier decided to set up a police outpost at Barato village. “However, after discussion with the traditional heads of the area, they have suggested that it should be set up in Mukroh village,” he added.
Tynsong further informed that the cabinet delegation would also urge the Union Home minister to direct both the state governments to maintain peace and that such an incident should not happen in the future at any cost.
The deputy chief minister said the state government has immediately deployed adequate police forces to create a conducive environment in these areas.
Appealing to all concerned not to communalize the issue, Tynsong said, “We need to maintain peace and tranquillity in Assam and Meghalaya and we will discuss the issue further in Delhi to ensure safety and security to the citizens of both states.”
