DIPHU, Nov 24: The body of a home guard Bidyasing Lekthe, who was killed in an attack by a mob at Mukroh on November 22, has reached his house at Jaluk Lanteng, West Karbi Anglong from Diphu.

The executive members (EMs) Amarsing Tisso and Ritesh Enghi along with ex-chairman of Diphu Municipal Board, Mohon Tisso and secretary of KAAC,  Mukul Kathar visited the residence of late Lekthe to offer their condolences and pay their last respects. EM Tisso handed over an amount of Rs 5 lakh as ex gratia from the Chief Executive Members’s Relief Fund to Basapi Timungpi, wife of late Lekthe.

Tisso said Lekthe will be recognised as a Karbi national hero and his statue will be constructed at Mukroh. A school in his name will be set-up there. The wife of late Lekthe will be given a job by KAAC.

Tisso said Mukroh is well within West Karbi Anglong as per the notified boundary of the government. “As our CEM, Tuliram Ronghang has always said that under the notified boundary not an inch of Karbi Anglong land will be given to others and Team Karbi Anglong will stand firm in protection of the boundary,” Tisso said.

Meanwhile, the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) in a press conference held here at District Press Club of Karbi Anglong said they have visited the site of incident at Mukroh on November 23, where five Khasi Pnars and one home guard from Karbi Anglong died in a clash. The APHLC suspects the involvement of Bangasena in the incident.

The APHLC president, JI Kathar questioned the Assam police whether the area (Mukroh) is within West Karbi Anglong.

“If so then why did not the Assam police go to pick-up the dead bodies? Has Assam surrendered Umkroh area to Meghalaya?” asked Kathar.

Kathar thanked the chief minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma and the Khasi Pnars for picking up the dead bodies after the firing. The APHLC has welcomed the inquiry that is to be conducted by the NIA or CBI.

In another press conference convened by the Joint Coordination Committee for Protection of Autonomy (JCCPA) said the statement of Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad Sangma saying that the firing was “unprovoked” was not true.

The convenor of the JCCPA, Khorsing Teron said, “We cannot agree with the statement of CM, Conrad Sangma that the firing was ‘unprovoked’. It is inappropriate to downplay the rampant timber smuggling to Meghalaya. Likewise, we also cannot agree with the statement of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma that the firing ‘seemed unprovoked’. The attack upon the on duty police and forest protection personnel itself proves that the police and forest protection personnel acted under provocation.”
