Prohibitory under section 144 CrPC promulgated in entire Imphal East district

IMPHAL, Dec 8 (NNN): The entire Imphal east district of Manipur has been placed under section 144 of CrPC for two months with effect from noon of December 7, an order said on Thursday.

The district administration has promulgated prohibitory order under sub-section 2 of section 144 CrPC, 1973, to keep law and order in the district under control.

The order issued by additional Imphal east district magistrate Shamim Ahmad Shah banned the assembly of five or more persons which is likely to turn unlawful and carrying of firearms, sticks, stones, weapons or objects of any description which can be used as offensive weapons.

The prohibitory order passed based on information provided by the SPs of Imphal East and Imphal west districts.

The Imphal east SP, in a letter to the district magistrate stated that there is information and apprehension regarding likelihood of serious breach of peace, disturbances to the public tranquility and danger to human lives and properties in the area because of unlawful activities of some anti-social elements.

While, Imphal West SP requested the district administration to issue prohibitory order under section 144 CrPC in the area of Imphal east district having police jurisdiction of Imphal west district police.

The prohibitory order has already been imposed at a locality of the district with effect from 10 pm of December 5 by an order issued by the Imphal east district magistrate earlier.

The prohibitory order came after a clash between two groups of people in and around the Telipati area over the issue of alleged destruction of idols on December 5.

Even as there is no report of escalating the violence in the area, police assisted by CRPF personnel have been deploying in and around the locality since then.
