The traditional dresses were also distributed to the Karbi tribe living in Morigaon and Nagaon districts of Assam. The tribes include Karbi, Garo, Tiwa, Bodo, Rengma and Dimasa.

Distributing the traditional dresses the Executive Member (EM) of KAAC, Art & Culture and Health & Family Welfare, Surjya Rongphar said the scheme was introduced by the MLA Rupsing Teron when he was the EM for Art & Culture, KAAC. The scheme was introduced to help various tribes in developing and promoting their respective culture.

He also said there are distinctive motives on traditional dresses that can only be worn by men or women. “There are some distinctive motifs used in traditional dresses of the Karbis that can be worn only by men and other motifs that can be worn only by women. The different motifs are used on clothes to identify the dresses of men and women. The traditional dresses sold in markets have no authenticity, i.e., the use of motifs on clothes. A resolution has been adopted in the Executive Committee (EC) meeting of KAAC to stop selling clothes with no authenticity. Action will be initiated against those traders and merchants selling clothes brought from outside without any original motifs on them.”

In the programme, ten sets of traditional dresses were distributed to each tribe. The function was attended by Joint Director, Cultural Affairs, Rani Terangpi; Tribal Cultural Research Officer, Dilip Kathar and Principal, Karbi Traditional Music, Culture & Research Institute, Bonsam Kathar.
