NAGAON, March 24: The department of History, Nowgong Girls’ College organised a two-day long ICHR sponsored national seminar on ” The role of women in the freedom movement in North East India: some untold stories” in collaboration with Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, Assam Prant here at the college premises on Tuesday and Wednesday last.
The seminar began with an inaugural session presided over by Dr Tosheswar Nath, president, governing body of the college. At the very outset, Dr Balin Kumar Bhuyan, principal of the College welcomed all the dignitaries, the research scholars and the participants.

In his address, Munin Borah, assistant professor, department of History and the convener of the seminar, mentioned that a total of 35 research papers were received from academicians, research scholars and students of prominent universities and colleges of the region.
He also shared the objectives of the seminar and justified the cause of selecting the theme. Inaugurator Hemanta Dhing Mazumdar, national general secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Itihash Sankalan Yojana, New Delhi, highlighted the role of lesser known female freedom fighters of Assam such as Kanaklata Barua, Bhogeswari Phukanani etc.
The keynote speaker, Dr Rajen Saikia, eminent historian and former president of Indian History Congress, highlighted the main objective of studying history is to seek truth. He gave a broad outline of the history of the North East and mentioned that women appeared in the national freedom movement during the 1930s. He said that the Indian national freedom movement was a movement of symbols such as salt, khadi and the national flag which motivated the people for defiance against the British. People know about Sarojini Naidu, Annie Besant but the role played by Bhikaiji Cama in Indian freedom struggle often goes unnoticed, Dr Saikia asserted further.
