Drugs worth around Rs 15 crore seized after new govt formed in Manipur: CM Biren

IMPHAL, March 28 (NNN): Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday claimed seizure of narcotic drugs worth around Rs 15 crore since the formation of the new BJP-led government in the state.

The new BJP-led government in the state was formed on March 21 with N Biren Singh taking oath as the chief minister of the state. After becoming the chief minister of the state for the second consecutive term, Biren Singh had reiterated his government’s commitment to continue the “war on drugs” to make the state free from drug menace. He had also warned all those involved in illicit drug trafficking to surrender themselves or face severe consequences as per the law.

“Since the formation of the new government, we have been able to seize narcotics worth over Rs 15 crore,” Biren Singh wrote in his Facebook post on Sunday. In the post, he added that no leniency towards illicit drug traffickers and will go after all of them as the “war on drugs 2.0” is going on. Further, in the post, he informed about a series of recoveries of illegal drugs with the arrest of as many as six alleged drug traffickers including two women in separate operations in the last two days.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, a joint team of Imphal West police commands and Wangoi police station arrested three persons including a woman after 23 gram of suspected heroin powder packed in 24 plastic vials were recovered from their possessions. They have been identified as Pitru, Sakina and Sanathoi. The police also recovered Rs 90,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of selling the narcotic items, from their possessions, police said.

In a separate incident, a combined team of Jiribam police and narcotics cell of the district police also arrested one person who identified as Md Azamir along with 316.62 gram of brown sugar packed in 25 soap cases on Saturday night, according to police. They said that the combined team of security forces on routine frisking and checking of vehicles plying along NH-37 at Leingangpokpi village near the office of the Driver’s Union, Jiribam intercepted one Toyota INNOVA coming from Imphal side last night around 11.30 pm.

The narcotic drugs were found during a check of the vehicle. A total of 25 soap caps containing suspected brown sugar wrapped with green colour polythene bags were found inside the skimmed fuel tank of the said vehicle, police added.

Yet in another incident, a team of Imphal East district police arrested one person later identified as Vareithing along with four soap cases of heroin powder, weighing about 103gm during an operation at Kyamgei Pal Ahanbi Thong under Irilbung police station.

On the same day, another team of the district police arrested one youth later identified as Md Altaf with 63 gram of Heroin powder in three soap cases and 94 plastic vials, police further added.
