JORHAT: As per the call given by the Central committee of AASU the Jorhat district unit of the students’ body on Saturday staged a sit-in protest here demanding the withdrawal of the state Government’s decision to teach science and mathematics in English from class VI in vernacular medium schools.
The protesters with banners and placards shouted slogans against the Assam government decision and the education department to teach mathematics and science subjects in English, stating that the decision was not in the interest of the students and the state.
They said that the decision was contrary to the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, which lay stress on promoting use of mother tongue languages. They also cited that the Prime Minister and this union home minister earlier had called for using mother tongue languages in engineering and medical colleges.
The protesters seeking withdrawal of the decision said that the government should find an alternative way to enable students of vernacular schools to speak English instead of this decision (teaching mathematics and science in English).

It may be mentioned here that the Government last year had proposed to teach mathematics and science in English in vernacular medium schools from class III following which there were protest across the state against the decision by several organizations, as per reports.
