SIVASAGAR, April 18: Former HoD English in Moran College, assistant professor in Dibrugarh University education department, and later the director of the department of journalism and mass communication, Dr Kamala Borgohain passed away in a Dibrugarh nursing home on April 13.
He had been suffering from cardiac ailments for a long time. A popular short-story writer, Borgohain shot into prominence with his ‘Moi Eta Xap’ which has a thematic resemblance with Franz Cafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’.
Alumni of Dibrugarh University, Borgohain had an MA degree both in English and Assamese literature. He was actively involved in the development works in Moran town where he settled in 1973. He was the president of Moran Sahitya Sabha, Moran Sports Association, and a member of the Dibrugarh University Sports Board. His published works include- ‘Moi Eta Xap’, ‘ Iepar Xipar’. ‘Andhakarat Aamar Astitwa’, ‘Sristi Aru Dristi’,and ’Kamala Borgohain’s Nirbachita Galpa’. On Feb 26, a Kamala Borgohain Felicitation Volume, edited by Sovit Chetri, was brought out which includes articles from a host of noted writers and critics in Assam.
Borgohain leaves behind his wife Dr Mamoni Borgohain, daughters Dr Swagata Bharti and Dr Swati Kiran besides a host of other relatives. His death is mourned by Dr Nagen Saikia, former president, of Asom Sahitya Sabha, minister for Disaster Management Jogen Mohan, cultural minister Bimal Bora, MLA Chakradhar Gogoi, former central minister Pawan Shing Ghatowar, Moran Sahitya Sabha, Moran Press Club, Moran Shah Majdur Sabha, and many other institutions.
