DIBRUGARH, Oct 23: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt General KT Parnaik, (Retd), attended the silver jubilee celebration of the Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) at Dibrugarh, Assam, on Wednesday.
Established in 2000, SEWA has completed 25 years of dedicated service in uplifting the underprivileged through education, skill development, empowerment, and compassion across Assam and the North Eastern region.
The Governor lauded SEWA for its multi-dimensional initiatives in promoting gender equality, sustainable livelihoods, mental well-being, and disaster resilience, along with its pioneering work in organic tea cultivation, clean cookstove adoption, and elderly care programmes.
He praised SEWA’s Family Counselling Centre for supporting over 2,300 families and its WASH initiatives for transforming sanitation and hygiene standards in tea garden communities.
Encouraging SEWA to look ahead with renewed purpose, Governor Parnaik urged the organisation to strengthen its efforts in climate action, sustainable agriculture, and mental health awareness.
He stressed on engaging youth and volunteers, fostering leadership, and building institutional sustainability to ensure long-term impact.
“As SEWA steps into the future, it must continue to walk with the same humility, courage, and compassion that defined its past,” the Governor said. “The challenges may change, but the mission remains to empower the voiceless, uplift the marginalised, and build a society rooted in equality, dignity, and hope.”
The Governor paid homage to Late Shanti Gogoi, the founder of SEWA, for her vision, compassion, and lifelong dedication to social reform and women’s empowerment.
He also commended Smti Nandita Hazarika, President of SEWA, for her dynamic leadership, and Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi (Retd) for his continued guidance in strengthening SEWA’s credibility and outreach.
On the occasion, the Governor conferred the Best Community Action Awards to Anastacia Toppo and Hemma Reddy of Kellyden Tea Estate, Nepolian Meli of Majuli, Paulus Basumatary of Udalguri, and Anita Kumari of Margherita Tea Estate.
Governor Parnaik also launched the ‘SeshYatra’ Van and Service and released SEWA’s silver jubilee souvenir.
The event concluded with a colourful cultural presentation, including a traditional Jhumur dance, performed to mark the milestone celebration.
The event was attended by Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd.); Nandita Hazarika, President, SEWA; Arfan Hussain, Vice President, SEWA; Prof Alak Kumar Buragohain, former Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University; Kaushik Deka, Managing Editor, India Today; Bikram Kari, Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh; and Anastacia Toppo, Community Health Volunteer, Kellyden Tea Estate, among others.
