11th Assam Senior Citizens’ Conference mid-term session in Hojai on Jan 24

Over 1,000 delegates expected; free health camp to be organised

HOJAI, Jan 18: Around 1,000 senior citizens from across Assam are expected to participate in the 11th annual mid-term session of the Assam Senior Citizens’ Conference, scheduled to be held on January 24, 2026 (Saturday) in Hojai.

This was informed by Anup Kumar Barthakur, Secretary of the Reception Committee, during a press meet held in Hojai on Sunday afternoon. Barthakur described the event as a landmark occasion, stating that it was a matter of pride that a conference of such magnitude was being hosted in Hojai for the first time.

In conjunction with the conference, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of Assam will organise a free health consultation and medicine distribution camp for senior citizens. The camp will begin at 7 AM at B-Block, Hojai Girls’ College and will be conducted by specialist physicians from the region. Residents of the district aged 50 years and above have been requested to avail themselves of the free facilities.

Barthakur further informed that the main session of the conference will commence at 2 PM at Sahityarathi Bezbarua Bhawan, New Market, Hojai, under the chairmanship of Baneshwar Khaund, State president of the Assam Senior Citizens’ Association. Assam Cabinet Minister Piyush Hazarika will attend as the chief guest, while Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will be the special guest. Dr Pradeep Thakuria, president of the Assam Senior Citizens’ Welfare Council will deliver the keynote address.

The open session will be inaugurated by Hojai District Commissioner Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati. Other distinguished guests include Prof Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MP of Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency, Pallav Gopal Jha, IAS, Secretary of Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Assam, Ramkrishna Ghosh, MLA of Hojai and Shibu Mishra, MLA of Lumding. Prasanna Kumar Barthakur, General Secretary of the Assam Senior Citizens’ Association will also be present.

On the occasion, a souvenir titled “Biyoli Baibhav” will be released. Organisers from the Hojai chapter of the Senior Citizens’ Association have appealed to the citizens of Hojai district for wholehearted support and cooperation to ensure the success of the programme.

Notably, during the press meet, Krishna Kumar Sharma, president of the Reception Committee, Dr Samsul Hoque, Working president of the Reception Committee and active member Uma Sankar Goswami were also present.
