SIVASAGAR, Sept 2: The Aam Admi Party has expressed concern
over the BJP-led government’s decision to extend palm oil tree
plantations in the state.
In a release given to this correspondent recently by Satya
Pratim Gayan of the media cell, stated that the state
coordinator of the party Dr Bhaben Chowdhury has pointed out
that the world’s largest producer of palm oil Malaysia and some
European countries have stopped their cultivation due to
environmental affect. It stated that a palm tree requires over
300 liters of water a day and soon the entire area becomes dry.
It would be highly detrimental to Assam’s environment if the
state government patronized palm oil tree cultivation in the
state.
Signed by Jayanta Kumar Kalita, state media coordinator, the
release further alleged that Assam receives step-motherly
treatment from the BJP-led Central government and hence
dumps these projects in the NE. The Central government has
launched the project in over 17 districts in the country including
Sadia and the state government is still silent over the
allegations that it is harmful to our environment.
