MARGHERITA, July 7: The 8th Triennial Convention of the All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA), Margherita Regional Committee, was held on Sunday at Royal Siddharth Bhawan, Vineer Mill Bazaar, in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
AASAA was established in 1996 with the objective of protecting the constitutional and fundamental rights of the Adivasi community, which has been residing in Assam for centuries.
For the past 29 years, the organisation has been actively advocating for the upliftment of the community, pressing for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, land pattas, wage hikes for tea garden workers to ₹551, and the formation of an Adivasi Autonomous Council through statewide agitational programmes.
The convention began with a tribute ceremony in which candles were lit before the portraits of AASAA founder Justin Lakra, Vasko Charkamo, and Adivasi Jatiyo Nayak Pradeep Nag.
The previous Margherita Regional Committee was unanimously dissolved during the session, paving the way for the formation of a new committee.
The convention was attended by several key representatives, including AASAA Tinsukia District Committee President Elbert Orea, Vice President Mathias Hemron, J.K. Kumar Tanti, Chief Advisor Motu Tanti, General Secretary Jarnel Minj, Central Executive Committee member Numal Suryabanshi, Sports Secretary Robert Kor, Mariash Ekka, and Jesmina Tirkey, President of Jani Shakti Sangati, Tinsukia District Committee.
The newly constituted AASAA Margherita Regional Committee includes Sanjay Barla as President and Sebastian Turuwar (Munda) as General Secretary, along with a 21-member executive committee.
