Jorhat, Jan 30 : Internationally acclaimed fashion designer Sanjukta Dutta has embarked on a homecoming of sorts ahead of her journey to New York Fashion Week, turning her spotlight towards the roots of Assam’s rich textile heritage.
Known for taking Assam’s iconic muga and silk fabrics to global fashion platforms for over a decade, Dutta has begun an “Assam Textile Journey” to reconnect with traditional weaving practices and engage directly with local artisans and fashion enthusiasts.
As part of this initiative, a two-day handloom exhibition and interaction programme was inaugurated on Wednesday at Clubway Grand, Club Road, Chandan Nagar in Jorhat. The exhibition features Dutta’s signature textile collections alongside indigenous woven fabrics, offering a blend of tradition and contemporary design.
During the event, Dutta interacted with local weavers, textile entrepreneurs and fashion lovers, discussing traditional weaving techniques, patterns, samples and Assam’s cultural textile legacy. She also shared insights into evolving fashion trends among the younger generation and reflected on her experiences and successes at international fashion shows across the world.
A significant turnout marked the opening day, with participants engaging in detailed discussions on preserving heritage crafts while adapting them for modern, global audiences. Dutta emphasised the importance of dialogue between designers and grassroots artisans to ensure sustainable growth of traditional textile industries.
The exhibition and interaction sessions will continue for two days, positioning Jorhat briefly—but proudly—on the global fashion map, just days before Assam’s textiles make their presence felt on the New York runway.
