Guwahati, Dec 17: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati has become the first institution in Northeast India to receive accreditation as an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Provider Centre, marking a significant leap in structured trauma care and emergency medical training in the region.
Under the leadership of Prof. (Col.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, the institute successfully conducted its inaugural ATLS Provider Course from 12 to 14 December. The programme aims to establish a standardised approach to trauma education in the Northeast.
The course was graced by Prof. (Dr.) M. C. Mishra, Chair of ATLS India and former Director of AIIMS New Delhi, along with a team of distinguished ATLS faculty members from across the country, who ensured training met international ATLS standards.
The ATLS accreditation highlights AIIMS Guwahati’s commitment to evidence-based trauma management, particularly during the critical “golden hour” following traumatic injuries, when timely interventions can be life-saving.
Each ATLS course at AIIMS Guwahati trains 16 delegates through two days of intensive theoretical and practical sessions, concluding with a formal assessment on the third day, strictly following ATLS protocols.
With this initiative, AIIMS Guwahati seeks to strengthen trauma care across the Northeast by building a skilled healthcare workforce, improving emergency response systems, enhancing patient outcomes, and reducing trauma-related mortality in the region.
