MARHERITA, Nov 8: The Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Margherita Regional Committee staged a protest on Friday afternoon by burning the effigy of Digboi Forest Division Divisional Forest Officer B V Sandeep (IFS) at NH 315, Ledo against rampant forest destruction in various reserve areas under the Digboi Forest Division.

The protesters accused unscrupulous businessmen of destroying forest areas unchecked, despite the government spending crores of rupees on planting saplings. They alleged that trees from reserved forest areas in the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district were being felled and used for constructing bridges with government grants, highlighting a failure of the Divisional Forest Officer to protect forest resources.

The protest, held on Ledo College Road, saw over a hundred AJYCP members raising slogans and demanding strict action against those involved in forest destruction. Bimal Singh, president of AJYCP Margherita Regional Committee and Kanchan Borah, vice president of AJYCP Tinsukia District Committee, urged the Assam government to ensure the protection of reserved forest areas and hold offenders accountable.
