More than 50 members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad Tinsukia district committee were present and shouted various slogans against the BJP-led government of Assam.

Kanchan Borah, the general secretary of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Tinsukia district committee, said that due to rampant price inflation of essential commodities, the general populace is suffering a lot, but despite this, the state government has not taken any concrete steps to reduce price inflation.

“Price inflation of grocery items, vegetables, medicines, petrol, diesel, LPG cylinders, school fees, and stationary items has increased rampantly. That’s why we staged a sit-in at North Margherita Rangamancha, and we demand that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma immediately take necessary steps so that the prices of essential commodities may become a little cheaper and the general populace can afford to buy,” said Kanchan Borah.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister through the Margherita sub divisional officer (civil).

They slammed the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Assam, recalling that BJP leaders had previously protested against price rises during the UPA government’s tenure by wearing garlands of onions, bringing LPG cylinders, and using bullock-carts.

They pointed out the irony that the same party (BJP), which has been in power for two successive terms at both the Centre and state, now seems indifferent to the issue of price hikes.

They alleged that the Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs department was inactive while people were struggling with the sharp increase in prices of essential commodities.

Pranabjyoti Saikia and Babu Dutta, president and general secretary of the AJYCP Jorhat district unit, respectively, led the protest program. Subsequently, the students’ body submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the Jorhat DC office, urging immediate attention to curb the price hike of essentials.

Our Nagaon correspondent adds: Nagaon district body of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a sit-in protest against the unbelievable increase in prices of essential commodities, lifesaving medicine, as well as other petroleum products in front of the office of the district commissioner, Nagaon on Monday.

Hundreds of agitators from the district unit of the organisation participated in the stir and reverberated the air with various slogans against the government and sought immediate intervention of the state government to control the skyrocketing prices of essential goods and lifesaving medicines. During the agitation, the protesters of the youth organisation also criticised the government for being silent on the issues for too long.

Pragjyotish Bonia and Debasish Das, the district president and secretary of the organisation respectively, said the role of the state government in this regard is very pitiable and mentioned that it has apparently proved how the state government is responsible for the middle class as well as the poor people.

Following the strike, the agitators submitted a memorandum to the state chief minister through the district commissioner and urged to initiate measures to control the ‘price hike’ in the state as early as possible, as asserted in a press note here.

Our Dibrugarh correspondent adds: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYCP) staged a sit-in protest in Dibrugarh on Monday to voice their frustration and anger over the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities in the state. The sit-in demonstration was staged from 10 am to 1 pm along with similar protests in district headquarters across Assam.

Protesters from the AJYCP gathered in large numbers, raising slogans against the government for its failure in curbing the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, including food grains, cooking oil, cooking gas, petrol, diesel, medicines, and vegetables.

Udayan Baruah, the president of AJYCP in Dibrugarh district, pointed accusing fingers at the state Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs minister, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, for his inability to address the escalating prices. Baruah, along with the general secretary, Gauranga Gogoi, criticised the government’s insensitivity toward the sufferings of the common people.

“We condemn the government’s inaction in controlling the rising prices of essential commodities. The common people are bearing the brunt of this price hike, and it is high time the government takes immediate action to provide relief,” Baruah exclaimed.

Gogoi also echoed the sentiment of the protesters, stating, “If the government fails to take suitable measures to control the price hike, we will intensify our agitation and hold massive demonstrations against the state government in the coming days.”

At the end of the protest, the demonstrators dispatched a memorandum to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the district commissioner.
