SIVASAGAR, Dec 1: The Asom Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRASU) has criticised the BJP-AGP government’s statement in the Assembly on November 29 regarding the proposal to grant Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, including the Koch Rajbongshi.

Addressing a press meet, AKRASU Upper and Middle Assam secretary Sankar Dutta said the announcement was nothing more than a “lollipop” and not a genuine solution to the community’s long-standing demand. He asserted that the union would never accept any division of the community into plains, valley or hills categories.

Dutta alleged that the proposal on ST status was not given due importance in the Assembly session and accused the state government of pursuing a divisive policy. He warned that the community would respond “in ample measure” in the next general elections.
