GUWAHATI, Mar 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the newly built administrative block of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam.
He also laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the academy’s redevelopment project, a big step towards bolstering police training infrastructure in the state.
After the ceremony, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh gave a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities of the academy to Shah. The home minister later went on a walking tour of the campus to go through the ongoing work and proposals for the academy.
He was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and some other top BJP leaders and the cabinet ministers. Shah’s trip to Dergaon falls under his three-day visit of Assam and Mizoram.
As per the officials, Lachit Barphukan Police Academy occupies an area of 340 acres and is witnessing an extensive redevelopment initiative costing Rs 1,024 crore in two phases. Phase-I, that incurred a cost of Rs 167.4 crore, has an under-construction five-storey administration building equipped with smart classes, sophisticated research centers, a gun simulator, and modernized office spaces.
Also, a law enforcement museum has been constructed on the academy’s premises and it also accommodates a nicely conditioned parade ground where training can take place.
In a major revelation on Friday, Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika disclosed that the Bhutan Police will receive training at the academy shortly. This development is likely to increase regional cooperation on security and boost Assam’s reputation as a hub of police training and law enforcement in India.
