GUWAHATI, Feb 19: With Assembly elections drawing closer, Amit Shah will arrive in Silchar on February 19 for a three-day visit to Assam, signalling a decisive push by the BJP ahead of the polls.
Shah will stay overnight in Cachar district before travelling on February 20 to the BSF’s Natunpur border outpost along the India–Bangladesh frontier to assess the security situation. Officials said the review gains added significance amid heightened focus on border management in the run-up to the elections.
At Natunpur, the Union Home Minister will launch the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), a Central initiative aimed at strengthening infrastructure and livelihood opportunities in border areas. The scheme is designed to reduce migration from remote villages by enhancing connectivity and creating employment avenues.
Later in the day, Shah will address a BJP rally in the Barak Valley, formally kicking off the party’s campaign in the region. The Barak Valley, comprising three districts, is considered crucial to the BJP’s electoral prospects in southern Assam.
Following the rally, Shah is scheduled to travel to Agartala in Tripura before returning to Assam the same evening.
On Saturday, he will attend the annual day parade of the Central Reserve Police Force at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati. Officials noted that this will be the first time the CRPF parade is being held in the Northeast, a move seen as symbolically significant.
Shah will also lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kasutoli in Sonapur, near Guwahati.
This will be his third visit to Assam since December 29, as the BJP seeks a third consecutive term in the 126-member Assembly, with elections expected in March–April.
