SIVASAGAR, Sept 3: The Rangpurjyoti Club, in association with the Sivasagar District Sports Association, observed the 87th birthday of Arjun Bhogeswar Barua on Tuesday, celebrated statewide as Abhiruchi Sports Day. The 1966 Bangkok Asian Games gold medalist, Bhogeswar Barua, attended the cake-cutting ceremony at the Rangpurjyoti Club, where he received warm felicitations and greetings from hundreds of sports lovers, organisers, and students.
The function was graced by several prominent sports personalities and organisers, including Rana Khan, Babul Khan, Haren Duwora, Manoj Kr Borthakur, Anil Acharjee, Manoj Bhagawati, Sarat Hazarika, Mrinal Chutia, Rajani Chetia, Dhiren Chetia, Anil Gogoi, and others.
Due to age-related issues, Bhogeswar Barua could not participate in the morning run, a tradition in which he had been the star attraction for many years during the Abhiruchi Sports Day Run in Guwahati. Despite not travelling to Guwahati, Barua expressed happiness at being among familiar faces at home in Sivasagar, continuing to inspire young talents. The morning marathon was flagged off by district sports officer Sanjay Upadhyaya and the president of Sivasagar Sports Association, Punaram Mili. The marathon concluded near Bhogeswar Barua’s life-size statue near the Sivasagar Circuit House.
