GUWAHATI, June 11: In a meeting held at the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati on Wednesday, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt General K T Parnaik (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, YSM, called on the Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, to deliberate on key regional matters and foster enhanced cooperation between the two neighbouring states.
The interaction was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere and focused on a wide array of issues concerning peace, progress, and the prosperity of the Northeast region.
According to an official statement, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh commended the positive strides taken by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in addressing and resolving long-standing inter-state border disputes.
He noted that the ongoing discussions between the two governments have created a renewed sense of goodwill and trust among the people living along the border, who have historically maintained strong cultural and social ties.
Drawing from his previous experience as a Corps Commander in Tezpur, Governor Parnaik expressed concern over the persistent challenges posed by illegal immigration in the region.
He underscored the need for continued vigilance and robust administrative measures to curb the issue, warning that unchecked immigration could pose demographic and security challenges in the future.
During the discussion, the Governor also highlighted the transformative potential of the Government of India’s Act East Policy and the ‘Rising Northeast’ initiative.
He described these as key policy interventions capable of reshaping the developmental trajectory of the region.
The Governor stated that the Northeast is poised to emerge as a significant hub for manufacturing, services, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration, particularly in trade and connectivity with Southeast Asia.
In a region perennially affected by natural calamities, the Arunachal Governor also raised concerns over the devastating impact of annual floods and landslides, especially the loss of human lives and damage to property and livelihoods.
He called for comprehensive and sustainable measures to mitigate the impact of such disasters and emphasised the importance of long-term planning and community resilience.
As a symbolic gesture of goodwill and appreciation, Governor Parnaik presented Governor Acharya with a copy of the book Orchids of Arunachal Pradesh.
The book highlights the rich biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh and serves as a tribute to the state’s pristine natural heritage and unique ecosystems.
Both Governors reaffirmed their commitment to work collaboratively in addressing shared challenges and furthering the developmental aspirations of the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
