Guwahati, 17 Oct: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan, approved the “Assam Satra Preservation and Development Commission Bill, 2025” aimed at protecting the state’s sacred heritage institutions. The bill seeks to combine modern governance with traditional reverence to preserve Satra institutions and promote their cultural and economic potential for future generations.
The proposed bill will establish a Commission tasked with protecting Satra lands from encroachment and disputes through transparent governance. It also aims to promote sustainable economic growth via heritage tourism and Satriya arts. Additionally, the Commission will create a digital repository for lands, artefacts, and manuscripts to safeguard Vaishnavite heritage and make it accessible globally.

The Commission will comprise a Chairperson, a retired High Court judge appointed by the state government, and a Member Secretary, the Director of Land Requisition, Acquisition and Reforms, Assam (ex-officio). Two members will represent Satra institutions, nominated by the state government, and one retired civil servant with experience in land administration will also be included. The cabinet noted that this structure would ensure both administrative oversight and cultural representation.
