Guwahati, Jan 02: The Assam cabinet kicked off the New Year with a spending spree that favours classrooms and hospital corridors over confetti, approving capital expenditure worth more than Rs 1,650 crore for education and healthcare on January 1.

At its first meeting of the year, the council of ministers cleared Rs 1,201.16 crore for the construction of a new medical college centred around Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, along with the development of the Kalapahar campus in Guwahati. The project is expected to significantly boost tertiary healthcare services while expanding medical education capacity in the state capital.

Officials said the proposed medical college would help ease pressure on existing institutions and improve access to advanced treatment, particularly for patients from lower-income groups who depend heavily on public hospitals.

In a parallel move aimed at strengthening foundational learning, the cabinet also sanctioned Rs 455 crore for the construction of 100 schools across Assam. The initiative is intended to improve basic education infrastructure, with a focus on underserved and remote areas where access to quality schooling remains patchy.
