Assam celebrates Asom Divas, honours legacy of Chaolung Sukapha

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Dec 2: On the auspicious occasion of Asom Divas, the NCC troop of Dakhin Nagsankar HS, under the 5 Assam NCC Battalion, organised a motivational lecture for NCC cadets on Monday. The day-long program began with the NCC flag hoisting by Colonel Abraham N, the commanding officer of 5 Assam Bn, NCC, which was followed by a march past demonstrated by the NCC cadets of the school. The open session commenced with the lighting of an earthen lamp in front of the portrait of Sukapha by Trilochan Das, officer-in-charge of Sootea Police Station, and the offering of floral tributes by Ballav Chapagain, headmaster of the school.

Addressing the cadets as the chief guest, Colonel Abraham spoke about the significance of Asom Divas and the importance of observing this special day. He further elaborated on the role of the NCC in the nation-building process and encouraged cadets to put their efforts into joining the uniformed services. He briefly explained the entry process for joining the armed forces and highlighted the benefits for NCC cadets and certificate holders in their career options.

The motivational session was also addressed by Trilochan Das, officer-in-charge of Sootea PS, as the guest of honour. He spoke about the NCC as the second line of defense and inspired the cadets to consider uniformed services as a career option. Subedar Prem Kumar, junior commissioned officer (JCO) and a veteran of the Kargil War, shared his inspiring experiences from the Kargil War, motivating the cadets to lead their lives in a positive direction and to never give up under any circumstances.

Earlier, the headmaster of the school, Ballav Chapagain, delivered the welcome address, while Anjan Baskota, associate NCC officer of the school, offered a vote of thanks. All proceedings of the session were conducted by Mina Thapa, assistant teacher of the school. The event was attended by Lila Kanta Sarma, Bhabani Sarma, Narad Upadhyaya, Arup Barua, Homnath Dhakal, Muniraj Sarma, teachers, along with NCC cadets, ex-cadets, and students of the school.

Our Demow correspondent adds: Under the patronage of the Demow Regional Tai Ahom Students Union and in association with the greater Demow people, the sixth annual Kendriya Sukapha Divas (Asom Divas) 2024 was organised at the Demow Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Building on Monday. The flag hoisting, moidam tarpan, along with various other programs, were organised on the day. Drawing competition, essay competition, and speech competition were held among the students on the day. In the evening, the prize distribution and felicitation program were organised. The winners of the different competitions were awarded prizes.

Our Margherita correspondent adds: A rich tribute was paid to Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Empire and the architect of Greater Assam, at his statue located at Eco Park Hill View, Margherita, on the occasion of Asom Divas on Monday.

Flowers were offered, and earthen lamps were lit in Chaolung Sukapha’s honour, who is known as the unifier of Greater Assam.

Chaolung Sukapha, who crossed the Patkai Hills in 1228 AD to establish the Ahom dynasty in Assam, is revered as a symbol of unity and integration. It was on December 2, 1972, that Bhim Kanto Gogoi declared this day to be celebrated as Asom Divas, also called Sukapha Divas, which is now observed every year across every corner of Assam with great gaiety and fervour, said Tunu Gogoi Saikia.

Renowned Tai language and culture researcher and retired principal of Margherita College, Pranab Gogoi; Margherita College retired vice principal, Tunu Gogoi Saikia; noted social worker of Margherita, Debojit Baruah; Tai Ahom Development Council member, Nabojit Baruah; and Chaolung Sukapha Managing Committee president, Ranjit Konwar, along with many other resourceful and distinguished persons of the Tai Ahom community, participated in the event. People from Margherita co-district area, irrespective of caste, creed, race, language, and religion, also attended. The event included a discussion focused on the unity and integration of various ethnic groups.

The event, organised by the Chaolung Sukapha Managing Committee, was attended by dignitaries and local residents from the Margherita co-district area.

The committee also announced that an earthen lamp lighting ceremony would be held at Chaolung Sukapha’s statue in the evening to further commemorate the occasion.
