Guwahati , Jan 10: The Assam government has crossed the 1.5 lakh government jobs mark since 2021, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on January 10, claiming the milestone as proof of a key election promise kept.
Posting on X, Sarma said he would head to Sarusajai to hand over appointment letters to more than 6,000 candidates selected for Grade III posts under the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE). “We have given above 1.5 lakh government jobs till today. More to come,” he wrote.
The declaration followed the distribution of appointment letters to 4,369 Grade IV candidates a day earlier. With these inductions, the total number of government jobs provided during the tenure of the present government now stands at 1,50,033—well past the one-lakh target announced during the Assembly polls.
Speaking at a programme at the Jyoti-Bishnu International Cultural Centre, the Chief Minister said recruitment reform was long overdue. He described the earlier system of department-wise examinations as chaotic, often marked by overlapping tests, corruption allegations and years of litigation, leaving several departments chronically understaffed.
To cut through this mess, the government introduced a unified recruitment framework by passing new legislation and setting up separate commissions for Grade III and Grade IV posts. Sarma said the ADRE exams were conducted on a single day across 28 districts, with over 9.12 lakh candidates appearing. Internet services were suspended during the examination to prevent malpractice and ensure a level playing field.
The absence of any court cases linked to the recruitment process, he said, reflected its credibility.
Addressing the newly appointed candidates, Sarma urged them to focus on efficient service delivery and improve citizens’ experience in government offices. He also announced that the ‘Swagata Satirtha’ portal would reopen on February 1, enabling mutual transfers among government employees.
Reiterating the government’s push for merit-based governance, the Chief Minister said transparent recruitment had helped rebuild trust among Assam’s youth, while entrepreneurship continues to be promoted as another pillar of employment generation in the state.
