DIPHU, Oct 19: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured a series of measures to strengthen security and address concerns arising from the recent border violence in West Karbi Anglong, in which a Karbi tribesman was killed by miscreants from Meghalaya.
A delegation of social organisations from Karbi Anglong met the chief minister in Dispur on October 18 to discuss the incident and demand lasting peace along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The delegation comprised representatives of the Karbi Students Association (KSA), Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS), Karbi Youth Association (KYA), Karbi Farmers Association (KFA), Karbi Unemployed Youth Association (KUYA), Karbi Students’ & Youth Council (KSYC) and Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum (KAWJF).
They submitted a memorandum seeking a permanent solution to recurring violence in the inter-state border areas.
In response, the chief minister announced that a permanent Assam Police Battalion camp would soon be established at Tapat to strengthen security.
The State Government will also provide ₹10 lakh ex-gratia to the family of the deceased, Lt Oriwel Timung, and offer a job through the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to a family member.
Sarma reiterated that the border remains demarcated as per the Government Notification of November 17, 1951, and said proper border pillars would be reinstalled.
He affirmed that Block 1 and Block 2 in West Karbi Anglong, as per the same notification, are part of Karbi Anglong and that there would be no change to this boundary.
The chief minister further assured that development projects, including healthcare facilities, schools, and welfare schemes, would be prioritised in the border areas.
He also informed the delegation that he would personally visit Tapat in November to review the situation.
