DIBRUGARH, Dec 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated Assam’s statewide bicycle distribution programme, beginning with a ceremonial handover of cycles to Class IX students in Dibrugarh. The initiative will benefit 3, 10,031 students across government, provincialised and model schools, including tea garden institutions.

Highlighting the programme’s purpose, the Chief Minister noted that transportation challenges contribute to nearly 6% of students dropping out after five years of schooling. “This cycle distribution initiative is designed to reduce dropout rates by ensuring faster and more reliable access to schools, particularly in rural and interior areas,” he said.

In addition to improved mobility, Sarma announced a comprehensive academic support package. Students preparing for Class X board examinations will receive Rs 300 per month, while admission expenses ranging from Rs 10,000 to 12,000 will be covered for those pursuing higher education after the HSLC exams.

Addressing gender inclusivity, the Chief Minister noted the ongoing Nijut Moina scheme for girls and launched the new Babu Asoni scheme to extend similar financial assistance to male students.
