Guwahati, Dec 27: Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Wednesday a chief secretary-level inquiry into the suicide of Dipankar Gogoi from Titabor.
This decision follows the suicide of the 24-year-old, who resided in GariKuri Brinasayak Gaon, Titabor, after police questioned him about alleged connections to the banned organisation, United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I). The questioning was in relation to a grenade explosion in Jorhat on December 14.
The inquiry is expected to conclude within 30 days. An earlier inquiry was ordered by Assam Police headquarters, to be conducted by IGP Eastern Range, which would include a detailed investigation of the procedural part, CCTV footage from the police station, and medical examination reports.
Dipankar Gogoi was found hanging from a tree in a tea garden behind his house. His father, Khagen Gogoi, has accused the police of inhuman torture leading to his son’s suicide.
However, Titabor sub-divisional police officer, Kakoli Patgiri, dismissed these allegations, stating that Dipankar had voluntarily appeared before the police and was released after a medical examination at the Titabor sub-divisional civil hospital.
