Guwahati, Feb 9: A special judge’s court on Friday rejected the bail plea of a suspended gazetted officer, Sukanya Bora, who was arrested in connection with the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scam in Assam.
As the additional district commissioner of Kamrup (metropolitan) district, Bora was charged with accumulating wealth disproportionate to her income. She was arrested on January 18 by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell after it was discovered that she amassed properties in the names of family members and relatives that were disproportionate to her earnings.
It is reported that her personal wealth increased by around 800 per cent in eight years of service. Investigations revealed that Bora allegedly acquired the wealth by declaring her mother as mentally unstable.
She owns significant properties in Guwahati, Morigaon, Hajo, and North Guwahati. She was suspended in March 2023 for suspected irregularities in executing MPLAD funded projects. In May, the Gauhati High Court denied her anticipatory bail plea.
Reports suggest that funds from Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan’s MPLAD were allocated for a road project in Barpeta, Assam, but the payment was made before the completion of 75 per cent of the work. The CM’s Special Vigilance Cell unearthed the scandal, revealing that four suspended officers had sanctioned the premature payment.
