SIVASAGAR, April 30: The annual conference of the All India Trade Union Congress Sivasagar district unit was held with a day-long programme in Yuva Dal on Thursday. The AITUC flag was hoisted by Madan Baruah, the district convener of the trade union while Pranob Chetia, another convener, lit the light to pay homage to the martyrs. The open session, presided over by veteran AITUC leader Reba Konwar, was addressed by Ramen Das, the state general secretary of the AITUC. Das in his speech said that the oldest trade union in the country AITUC was formed in 1920 and it raised the slogan for full independence in its initial years while uniting the workers under its banner. Lala Lajpat Rai, the first president, spearheaded the trade union movement in the country. Das said that the condition of the working class in India nosedived since the government adopted the new economic policy in 1991. He said that the BJP government that came to power in 2014 sold off the PSUs at throwaway prices to capitalists and also adopted strings of anti-people policies that rendered the peasants and workers helpless and dependent on government subsidies and freebees for survival. The delegate’s meeting elected a new 31-member district committee of the AITUC with Pranob Chetia as president and Madan Baruah as the general secretary.

Veteran CPI leader Dharma Baruah, AITUC state leader Phani Das and CPI district secretary Kanak Das in their speech came down heavily on the NDA government in the state and the Centre for the steep price hike of all essential commodities and urged the people to expedite the left and democratic movement against the NDA government in the country.
