Assam: Dr Saikat Patra New Chairman Of Dibrugarh Municipal Board

DIBRUGARH, April 11: Commissioner of ward no. 14, Dr Saikat Patra was selected as the new chairman of Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB), while Ujjal Phukan of ward no. 11 was selected as vice chairman.

Sources said there was a contest between Ujjal Phukan and Dr Saikat Patra for the post of chairman. But at last the party decided to select Dr Saikat Patra as the chairman of DMB.

Dr Saikat Patra, who contested from ward no. 14 defeated Independent candidate Shymal Das by a margin of 1,624 votes.

Prasanta Gogoi was selected as the chairman of Namrup Municipal Board while Nitu Sonowal Borgohain was given the charge of vice chairman.

Brajen Baruah was selected as the chairman of Chabua Municipal Board while Lakhi Sonowal was selected as vice chairman.

Pompi Shah was selected as chairperson of Naharkatia Municipal Board while Uday Ranjan Sonowal was given vice chairman charge.

The names of four Municipal Board of Dibrugarh district were announced officially by BJP observer Gobind Saikia at the BJP district office in Dibrugarh on Sunday.

Our Nagaon correspondent adds:  Meanwhile, the names of chairman and vice chairman of the newly elected Nagaon Municipality Board were announced on Sunday here at a party meeting held at the district office of the saffron party.

Ambika Majumder was selected as the new chairman for Nagaon municipality board in presence of the party’s district president Abhijit Nath and district observer Santanu Pujari by the district party workers while Simanta Bora was nominated as vice chairman of the new body of Nagaon Municipality Board, sources said.

It is noteworthy to mention that out of a total 26 wards, the ruling BJP was able to snatch 22 wards and its alliance partner AGP achieved 3 wards while the Opposition Congress retained only one ward.

Our Jorhat correspondent adds: Lakshmi Baruah Khargharia who was elected as a BJP ward member from ward no. 16 of the Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) in the civic polls held last month has been chosen by the party to be the chairperson of JMB.

A party source said that in a meeting held at the party office here on Sunday among the party ward members and district leaders in the presence of state vice-president Ajoy Konwar, the name of Lakshmi Baruah Khargharia and Dilip Dutta, ward member of ward no. 2 were selected for the posts of chairperson and vice-chairman respectively of the over 100-year old JMB.

However, the party has not yet made the official announcement in this regard, the source said.

Khargharia will be the third woman to occupy the JMB chairperson’s post with one from the Congress and BJP having headed the board respectively.

BJP and its ally AGP managed to secure a majority in the JMB by winning 11 (BJP-9 and AGP-2) wards out of the total 19. Congress won the rest of the eight wards and improved its tally by one as in the last JMB run by BJP; the Congress had seven ward members.
