GUWAHATI, July 21: In a significant move to commemorate the 400th birth anniversary of the great warrior Lachit Borphukan, the Assam government has partnered with JioCinema to host a short film on the legendary figure on its OTT platform. The film was initially screened on November 25, 2022, during the grand celebration of Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birthday at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, graced by the presence of Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

By collaborating with JioCinema, the Assam government aims to ensure that the film reaches a broader audience across the nation, becoming the first state in India to utilise an OTT platform for a national audience outreach.

In the upcoming months, the Assam government plans to produce more short films on significant topics like the World’s largest Bihu Celebration and the 200 years of Assam Tea, which will be made available on top OTT platforms in India, including JioCinema, HotStar, and Prime Video.

Addressing the occasion, chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed, “The OTT subscriber base in the country is one of the fastest-growing in the world. We have close to 45 crore OTT subscribers compared to 15 crore television sets. We want to showcase Assam’s rich historical and cultural heritage to this new-age audience, and in the coming days, we plan to leverage some of the successful platforms for this purpose. It is a proud moment for Assam that a film on Bir Lachit Barphukan is now available on one of the country’s largest OTT platforms, JioCinema.”
