Guwahati, Nov 17:  Assam has introduced a fresh set of controls on pig movement after African Swine Fever spread across several parts of the state. Veterinary teams reported a steady rise in cases from the beginning of 2025, triggering a review of containment measures.

Records show 297 epicentres since January, reflecting transmission across nearly all districts. Seven districts, namely Dhemaji, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Darrang, Jorhat and Dibrugarh, reported the highest concentration of infections. The month of October alone added 84 epicentres, prompting authorities to enforce stronger checks under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009.

The new order stops the transport of live pigs from one district to another with immediate effect. Movement within the seven marked districts has also been stopped, along with all pork sales in these areas. Officials said the steps are necessary to contain a disease that continues to affect the piggery sector across Assam.

This directive updates a previous order issued in June 2025.
