GUWAHATI, July 28: Along with the rest of the state, Desh Bhakti Divas was observed at Raj Bhavan to commemorate the 84th death anniversary of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan. The First Lady of Assam, Anita Kataria, along with the commissioner and secretary to the Governor, S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, and officers and staff of Raj Bhavan paid their heartfelt floral tributes to the portrait of Tarun Ram Phukan.
During the tribute ceremony, the commissioner spoke eloquently about the remarkable contributions of Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan to the freedom struggle. He emphasised the importance of learning more about the great patriot and encouraged everyone to imbibe his inspiring qualities.
In Cachar, ‘Desh Bhakti Divas, 2023’ was solemnly observed to mark the 84th death anniversary of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan. The Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Assam, in collaboration with the district administration Cachar, organised the commemorative function at the office of the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations in Silchar on Friday.
The event was graced by the presence of additional deputy commissioner Van Lal Limpuia Nampui as the chief guest, along with principal of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan HS School, Silchar, Suparna Sinha, secretary of the Press Club of Silchar, Shankar Dey, joint secretary of Silchar Press Club, Goutam Talukdar, and deputy director of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Deva Prasad Deori.
During the ceremony, all the dignitaries paid their respects to Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan by lighting the lamp and offering floral tributes to his portrait.
Addressing the gathering, ADC Van Lal Limpuia Nampui praised Tarun Ram Phukan as a prominent leader of Assam, popularly known as Desh Bhakta. He highlighted Phukan’s education and his contributions to the freedom movement and the Indian National Congress. Nampui emphasised the importance of following the path of idealism and patriotism set by Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan.
Suparna Sinha, principal of Deshabhakta Tarun Ram Phukan School, spoke about the role Phukan played in empowering women during the independence movement. She emphasised his efforts in encouraging women to actively participate in national activities and spread the message of non-cooperation.
Shankar Dey, secretary of Silchar Press Club, also shared his thoughts on the occasion.
The event also featured a flute recital by Soumen Paul Chowdhury, the manager cum producer of the cultural wing of the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar.
The ceremony aimed to honour the memory of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan and inspire the younger generation to uphold the spirit of patriotism. The state government of Assam observes Deshbhakti Divas on July 28 every year to commemorate his death anniversary and celebrate his selflessness and dedication to the country.

ADC Jayshankar Sarma, along with other officers, paid floral tribute to the portrait of Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan. Following the tribute, ADC Jayshankar Sarma delivered a speech highlighting the life and significant contributions of Tarun Ram Phukan to the nation. The event aimed to honour the memory of this great patriot and inspire the younger generation with his dedication and service to the country.
Our Nagaon correspondent adds: Desh Bhakti Divas was celebrated in Nagaon district to honour the memory of Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan on his death anniversary. The event was organised by the office of the district information and public relations officer, Nagaon, in collaboration with Nagaon district administration at the office premises of the district commissioner, Nagaon.
District commissioner, Narendra Kumar Shah, paid his respects to the revered freedom fighter and patriot of Assam by lighting a lamp and offering floral tributes to the portrait of Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan. The occasion was attended by sub-divisional officer (civil) of Nagaon Sadar, along with all additional deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, district information and public relations officer, Nagaon, and other top officials and employees of Nagaon district administration, who also paid their heartfelt tributes to the great leader.
Our Jorhat correspondent adds: The death anniversary of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan, observed as Desh Bhakti Divas, was solemnly commemorated by the Jorhat district administration in association with the office of the district information and public relations officer, Jorhat. The tribute ceremony took place at the conference hall of the Jorhat district commissioner’s office complex.
Presided over by the in-charge district commissioner, Pranab Kumar Bora, the event was attended by several administration officials and distinguished individuals who paid their respects to the great patriot by offering flower petals before his portrait.
During the ceremony, the in-charge district commissioner highlighted the significant contributions of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan to the freedom movement of the state. Various speakers also spoke about Phukan’s role in the struggle for independence and his remarkable activities during that period.
Among the dignitaries present were district administration officials, Jorhat Zilla Parishad president, and Jorhat Development Authority chairman, who joined in paying homage to the revered freedom fighter.
Our Tezpur correspondent adds: On the occasion of the 84th death anniversary of Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan, which is observed as Desh Bhakti Divas across the state, district commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra, along with other senior district administration officials, offered floral tributes at the portrait of the great freedom fighter at the DC office premises here.
The programme was organised by the office of the District Information and Public Relations Officer, Sonitpur, in association with the Sonitpur district administration. CEO of Zilla Parishad, Karabi Saikia Karan, DDC Gaya Prasad Agarwal, ADC Garga Mohan Das, COs Akashdeep Kakoti, and Madhurjya Borgohain, assistant commissioner Iris Arman Ahmed, DIPRO Neena Baruah, and other officials and staff of the district administration were present in the shradhanjali program.
