Assam Tourism minister Jayanta Mallah Baruah takes stock of land dispute

KOKRAJHAR, June 8: State tourism minister, Jayanta Mallah Baruah on Saturday visited the Namapara village under Fakiragram Police Station in Kokrajhar district to assess the situation following a violent land dispute at the village.

The minister also interacted with the villagers during his visit.

Remarkably, a land dispute turned violent at the Namapara village in Kokrajhar district on Friday, in which 11 people were seriously injured. The altercation erupted over land, sparking a scuffle that left several wounded.

The conflict, which stemmed from claims over a piece of land by many people, escalated into violence, resulting in serious injuries to several persons in the area.

The injured persons were immediately rushed to the Kokrajhar Rup Nath Brahma Civil Hospital for treatment. The injured have been identified as Paresh Barman (54), Nipen Barman (55), Biswajit Das (34), Sukuni Burman (42), Nabakanta Barman (28), Sushanta Barman (22), Parmeshwar Barman (19), Mintu Das (37), Minati Barman (30), Dineshwari Barman (45) and Bablu Barman (37).

Baruah was also accompanied by the executive members of BTR, Ranjit Basumatary, Arip Kumar,and senior police officials.

Later, the minister visited the injured persons who are going under treatment at the hospital.

Interacting with the media, Baruah said, “The state government and government of the Bodoland Territorial Region have assessed the situation and necessary initiatives will be taken to restore peace and tranquillity in the village where the violence over a land dispute occurred.”

He has termed the incident unfortunate for the residents of the village. He said that indigenous peoples would be protected and strict action would be initiated against the culprits.

“The guilty will not be spared and the police have already begun investigations into the matter,” Baruah said.

Meanwhile, the police have so far arrested several persons who were involved in the incident.
