Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday indicated that the state government is considering a ban on the Veer Lachit Sena, citing its alleged role in spreading unrest under the guise of cultural activities and donation drives.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Sarma said the group’s actions had begun to mirror those of banned outfits in the past. “If the situation demands, we may have to take steps similar to what was done with ULFA(I),” he said.

The government’s concern reportedly stems from a string of complaints accusing the Sena of intimidation and forced collection of funds across several districts. Officials claim the organisation’s activities have led to social tension and environmental damage, particularly during large-scale events.

Police have increased surveillance across Guwahati and nearby areas, with intelligence units tracking individuals believed to be linked to the group. Sources said the move is part of a broader strategy to prevent the emergence of new groups operating outside legal frameworks.

The Veer Lachit Sena, named after the 17th-century Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, has positioned itself as a cultural and nationalist outfit. However, the government’s latest remarks signal growing unease over its expanding influence and activities in Assam’s socio-political landscape.
