Awareness programme on legal and social issues held at Khagarijan College

NAGAON, June 19: An awareness programme covering a wide range of legal, social and public safety issues was organised at the Conference Hall of Khagarijan College on Friday.

The programme, themed on “COTPA 2003, Road Safety, Anti-Narcotics, NALSA DAWN Scheme 2025, NALSA ASHA Scheme 2025, Cyber and Financial Safety and Anti-Ragging,” was jointly organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Nagaon, the District Tobacco Control Cell under the Joint Director of Health Services, Nagaon, and Khagarijan College.

The event began with a felicitation ceremony.

In his inaugural address, Principal of Khagarijan College, Dr Ramesh Nath, highlighted the growing threat posed by narcotics and urged students to remain vigilant against substance abuse and its harmful consequences.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nagaon, Paramita Sarkar attended the programme as the keynote speaker.

She delivered a detailed presentation on various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and outlined the measures being undertaken by Nagaon Police to combat drug trafficking and abuse in the district.

Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel Jesmin Begum spoke on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, and explained the legal restrictions and health implications associated with tobacco consumption.

Dr Smitakshi Phukan, Nodal Officer of Nagaon District Health Services, addressed participants on precautions relating to dog bites and rabies prevention.

She also handed over an awareness leaflet to the college authorities for dissemination among students.

Enforcement Inspector Biswajit Hazarika delivered a session on road safety, highlighting the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic regulations.

Galib M Ahmed spoke on the social impact of drug addiction and emphasised the need for collective efforts to address the growing menace of substance abuse.

The programme witnessed active participation from students, faculty members and volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) units of the college.

The proceedings were conducted by Professor Mainul Haque Akand, Head of the Department of Political Science, Khagarijan College.
